Arthritis affects many more people than most realize, and there are a whole host of causes for the inflammation and joint pain associated with the condition. While there is no recommended diet for patients who experience the symptoms of arthritis, it is recommended that patients avoid foods that are known to cause inflammation or joint issues. Below are some of the foods that most commonly cause arthritic issues.
1. Fried Food
The dangers of fried food have been known for quite some time. The issue stems from the oily nature of the food combined with the over-processing that tends to lead to health issues. In particular, frying meats should be avoided by those suffering from arthritis, and frozen foods like what consumers get from standard fast food restaurants is the number one culprit. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables instead.
2. Processed Sugars
When certain foods are processed, the different processing techniques might induce the creation of certain toxins that result from components of the original food product being exposed to those processes. This often happens with foods that have to be heated or pasteurized, but it easily happens with processed sugars. The body has a natural defense mechanism against such toxins, and those defenses also cause inflammation, which can increase pain associated with arthritis.
While not every patient with arthritis symptoms is affected by their diet in the same way, there is strong evidence that certain proteins found in dairy products are able to cause direct irritation within joint tissues. Many who have had issues with such products have switched to a completely vegan diet that forgoes all animal products. The addition of excess salt is merely one more reason to avoid those ready-made microwavable meals. Other preservatives have been known to cause joint inflammation as well, so pay attention to the ingredients of all products.
Not all oils are created equally, and while there are some that should be avoided, there are some out there that can actually help reduce and alleviate joint swelling and pain. For instance, oily substances from corn are horribly unhealthy, but fish oils with omega-3 fatty acids are quite beneficial for those with arthritis.
